Spontaneously hopping on a plane is exciting, but choosing the right destination at the ideal time makes a huge difference in your travel experience.  Cheap airfare is always tempting but some destinations are worth the wait.

Need help brainstorming where to travel in 2019? Here are some of our favorite destinations by season and helpful tips to strategize your picks!

WINTER

Travel during the winter truly feels like a holiday. We approach winter travel by asking ourselves these 3 questions: do we want to be festive, embrace the cold, or escape the cold?

Thingvellir National Park in Iceland

Thingvellir National Park in Iceland

1. BE FESTIVE

  • NEW YORK, NEW YORK

Holiday travel during December & January is hectic but jolly.  New York City is hands down the best place to visit during the holiday season.  You’ll feel magic even with the herds of people and crazy traffic at Rockefeller Center.  So many tourist-friendly holiday attractions & classic spots to re-live your favorite holiday movies. If you’re really crazy (I mean adventurous) maybe even check out Times Square on New Years Eve!

  • VERONA/ VENICE

Celebrating any sort of holiday is a great excuse to getaway.  Winter is filled with many official and unofficial holidays - some even include a day off from work and holiday themed sweets.  In February, head to Northern Italy for the chance to celebrate 2 holidays in the same region.  Celebrate Valentine’s Day in the medieval city of Verona, the home of Romeo & Juliet.  And if you’re lucky Carnevale in Venice (the Italian version of Carnival or Mardi Gras) may fall on the same week as Valentine’s Day.

2. EMBRACE THE COLD

Instead of sitting at home daydreaming about summer, dress in layers and enjoy the season.  For those of you in warmer areas, this is your time to cool off & experience snow.

  • SWITZERLAND

Skiing/Snowboarding makes snow fun. So many destinations to find fresh powder & our favorite is the Swiss Alps in Interlaken, Switzerland.  The mountain range isn't exactly for beginners but riding down the snow capped mountains is quite the rush.  It’s the most gorgeous mountain range we’ve experienced in the winter & you won’t be disappointed with the snow.  If skiing/ snowboarding isn’t your thing, there are other options like canyon jumping for you adrenaline junkies or cozying up in a quaint, Swiss cabin with the finest hot chocolate.

  • ICELAND

Less light during the day? Then chase the Northern Lights.  Traveling to Iceland is the ideal destination to unleash your nature loving side.  There aren't many places in the world where you can swim between two continents in the middle of winter, gaze at giant waterfalls from the freeway, watch Aurora Borealis dance in her green/purple/blue splendor, & relax at a geo-thermal hot spring.  Rent a car and explore Iceland’s corky Scandinavian capital & all the ravishing nature the country has to offer!

3. ESCAPE THE COLD

NY winters are brutal but the cool thing about this planet is that it’s summer all year round in other parts of the world.  Ideally we’d love to be out of NY from January-March. But if we’re not jet setting to a warm destination, we’re probably at hot yoga.

Close to NYC + No Jetlag:

  • MEXICO

For our New Yorkers who want a quick break that’s affordable where you won’t have to recover from jet lag, choose a Caribbean island or Latin country in Central America.  For us, Mexico never disappoints.  From the Pacific side to the Caribbean side, beachfront tacos are always a win.  If you want to escape the city without escaping its trendy restaurants, nightlife, and wellness studios Tulum is your answer.  Not sure who creatively curated Tulum (assuming a hip Argentinean who lived in Manhattan, LA, Barcelona, and CDMX), but it’s all our favorite boho-trendy/city things in a beautiful Mexican beach town.

  • COSTA RICA

Another favorite is Costa Rica.  A tropical destination close to NYC with so much to offer.  Start north at the hot springs by the Arenal Volcano, stay in a treehouse overlooking rain forests, head south to Manuel Antonio to see sloths and other wildlife, then end off at the coast to surf and yoga.  Let Pura Vida wash away all your winter blues!

  • CUBA

If you want more of a cultural experience rather than a beach bum vacation, choose Cuba!  The vibrant  city of Havana will have you dancing the night away with a mojito in hand, and the city will open your eyes to the lives of the Cuban people.  Explore beyond Havana and stay at a “casa particular” with a local Cuban family in the Viñales countryside.  Ride horses along the lush green valleys and smoke fresh Cuban cigars at a tobacco farm. If you’re craving beach time check out the coastal town of Veradero.

Exotic:

  • BALI

If you’ve exhausted Central America and the Carribean and craving something a bit more exotic Bali is for you.  Ideal for seasoned and wannabe yogis & surfers, or anyone who wants to channel their inner “Eat, Pray, Love".  Bali is an island filled with good energy, culture, lush green rice fields, and white sand coasts. Whether you’re planning to travel solo, as a couple, or with friends - Bali’s high vibes are healing for the soul.

  • PHILIPPINES

If you want to go somewhere less commercialized than Bali and still be surrounded by pristine beaches, tropical landscapes, and friendly people, your heart is in the Philippines.  The Philippines is an archipelago comprising of more than 7,000 islands.  Each island is as different and as beautiful as the other. From white sand beaches, to mountainside villages, and to charming countrysides - see for yourself why it’s more fun in the Philippines!

  • SRI LANKA/ MALDIVES

I put these two countries together because they’re only a 1 hour flight away for less than $100 via Sri Lanken Airlines.  Where do I start? From surfing in the Indian Ocean, to wildlife safaris, to epic train rides through verdant tea plantations, and to historical Buddhist sites - Sri Lanka is a tropical playground.  It’s a beautiful country but the best part of Sri Lanka is its proximity to the Maldives.  Adventure it up in Sri Lanka then completely disconnect in the Maldives.

The Maldives is one of those destinations where it looks better in person that it does in photos.  Its world class resorts with overwater bungalows is expectedly paradise.  But what took us by surprise was the Maldivian culture in the remote island of Fulidhoo and the exclusive surf on North Male Atoll.

  • HAWAII

If you want to travel somewhere a bit more exotic but still want the amenities of America, Hawaii is the perfect destination.  The Hawaiian islands will warm your toes but most importantly your heart.  The spirit of aloha is contagious but it’s hard not to feel like your best self on the white sand beaches gazing at mountainside volcanos.

SPRING

Pack your Claritin-D cause spring is the time for flowers, trekking, & cities.  Re-awaken your senses from hibernation and explore outdoors. Here are our picks based on these 3 categories!

Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto, Japan

1. FLOWERS

  • JAPAN

Japan is the only country we rate 10/10 in all categories - the food is phenomenal, the people are kind, and everything runs on time.  Japan is perfect in every way and it’s especially stunning during its iconic cherry blossom season aka “sakura”.  It’s the most festive time to be in Japan - locals are dressed in their best pink, everything from coffee to cocktails are sakura themed, street festivals every weekend, and every corner is blooming with cherry blossoms.  The JR Rail Pass makes it accessible to explore the country via high tech bullet trains - from the hustle and bustle in Tokyo, to green tea fields in Wazuka, to ryokans in Hakone, and to Buddhist temples in Kyoto.

  • THE NETHERLANDS

Most people identify the Netherlands with Amsterdam’s historical canals, influx of bicycles, and well known dispensaries. But the Netherlands is more than just its charming cities.  The end of April brings the best out of the Netherlands from the colorful tulip fields in the Kukenhof Gardens and its national holiday "Kings Day” where the country dresses up in orange to celebrate the King’s inauguration.

2. TREKKING

  • NEPAL

Known for its mountains and legendary Mt. Everest treks, the high vibrations of Nepal will truly elevate you.  For seasoned trekkers book a local sherpa to guide you through the popular base camp or Anapurna circuit treks.  If time and funds are low or if trekking isn’t your thing, book a 1 hr flight via Buddha Air over the Mt. Everest range to still experience the heights.  Be sure to spend time in the  cultural haven of the Kathmandu Valley or bask in nature in the lakeside city of Pokhara.

  • BHUTAN

In the magical himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, negative carbon footprint exists.  Bhutan's untouched landscapes and clean air is the best way to experience spring.  You’ll feel one with nature climbing up Tiger’s Nest Monastery where the second Buddha is claimed to have landed on a flying tigress.  Tiger’s Nest Monastery is Bhutan’s most popular attraction yet the trail remains a spiritual experience for all travelers.

  • BEIJING, CHINA

As opposed to Bhutan, staying 3 days in Beiijing is equivalent to smoking 1 pack of cigarettes.  But hiking the Great Wall of China makes up for the damage.  One of the seven Wonders of the World, this manmade creation is a hike of of a lifetime.  Opt out on the main entrance and make the trip to hike from Simatai West to Jinshanling.  You’ll feel like you're on a private tour of the Great Wall + there’s more space to explore towers and take epic photos.

3. CITIES

  • INDIA: DELHI, AGRA, & JAIPUR

Spring is the best time to visit cities that have scorching summers or painful winters.  Why? Cause it'll be bearable to explore without a puffy jacket.  After spending over a month in sweaty, Southern India, Northern India’s weather was a breeze.  The Golden Triangle is India’s most famous tourist circuit & it’s expectedly hectic. We can't imagine going through the crowds and traffic during the summer. March was the perfect temperature to enjoy India’s famous cities and the wondrous Taj Mahal.

  • ROME, ITALY

Rome is always a good idea but we rather not explore during gloomy winter days and scorching summer dead-zone months during Ferragosto.  It’s warm enough to wear cute, instagrammable outfits but cool enough where you’re not gasping for water after walking to your 5th site of the day.  Plus Easter is just so pleasant in Rome - be sure to watch the papal audience at the Vatican, followed by a celebratory meal in Trastevere, then walk off the carbs & wine by strolling through ancient Roman sites, and end off the day watching sunset at Villa Borghese.

Click here for more on my ‘Where to Eat in Rome, Italy’ blog!

If you want to explore outside of Rome the possibilities are endless, thanks to the local and speedy trains via TrenItalia or Italo.  Nearby day trips from Rome: Tivoli, Orvieto, Assisi, & Perugia.  Or if you want to split your time up north (save the south for the summer), Cinque Terre and Lake Como are our favorites.

SUMMER

There is nothing like the European coasts in the summer.  Yeah it’s cheaper to go in the winter but would hate for you to miss out on boat rides and sun bathing by the Mediterranean Sea.  If Europe isn’t in your cards don’t worry -  summer always feels like vacation even at home (hello summer Fridays).

1. EUROPEAN COASTS

  • AMALFI COAST

Our favorite European coast because we’re biased when it comes to Italian food.  Positano’s romantic views will sweep anyone off their feet.  The colorful homes along the cliffy coast whether you’re gazing from a boat or your hotel terrace will charm you - while the fresh pasta and pizza, local seafood and limonciello will put you right at ease with la dolce vita.  The best way to explore the coast is by boat whether it’s by yacht, speedboat, or ferry.  Explore the local islands of Capri and Nerrano + the neighboring towns of Ravello and Amalfi.

The Amalfi Coast is the #1 tourist destination in Southern Italy for a reason.  But if you want to explore another coastal area in Southern Italy with less tourists and better beaches choose Sardegna.  Sardegna is an Italian gem but since it’s an island, let’s call it the pearl of Italy.  Sardegna’s turquoise waters, hidden caves, and delicious farm to table aguritismos will have you re-falling in love with Italy.

  • FRENCH RIVIERA

The South of France is the ideal luxury, beach vacation for the 1%.  But 99% of us can still enjoy the luxuries of the French Riviera.  Rent a moped and ride along the coast from Nice, to Monaco, and to Cannes.  Treat yourself to delicious french seafood and have a taste of how the other half lives.

  • SPANISH ISLANDS

Spanish islands come alive in the summer.  Rent a car and explore the beautiful island of Majorca: sun bathe at Es Trenc beach, gaze at panoramic views at Formentor, walk through the stone-built villages of Pollenca, & party in the port city of Palma.

If you really want to experience more Spanish nightlife and see more beautiful beaches (+ beautiful people) head to Ibiza.  Ibiza is on party mode 24/7 during the summer - from night clubs to day parties on the beach.  Dance the summer away to some of your favorite house djs playing at one of Ibiza’s iconic venues like Pacha and Space.

  • GREEK ISLANDS

World class sunsets overlooking the Aegean Sea, charming white washed homes along rugged cliffs, souvlaki gyros & grilled fish cooked to perfection, & volcanic black sand beaches - Santorini is heaven on earth and our favorite Greek island no matter how touristy it is.   There are hundreds of islands in Greece and each island has its charm - party on the beaches of Mykonos or Ios, romanticize over Santorini, go off the beaten beach paths of Kefalonia or Zakynthos, explore ancient Greek history in Crete, & really get your history on in Athens.

2. Stay-cations in NY

  • MONTAUK

The drive out east is worth it for the end.  Montauk brings Manhattan’s trendy restaurants and nightlife to the coast.  Stay at Gurney’s, Montauk’s most popular beachside resort. But if you can’t afford a night, grab a drink at the beach bar or schedule a spa day at the seawater spa.  If you’re into more outdoor activities - surf at Ditch Plains, beach camp at Hither Hills State Park, or bike from town to the Montauk Lighthouse.

  • CAPE & ISLANDS

If you want to stay on the East Coast this summer, the Cape and Islands are only a couple of hours away.  Experience the New England good life on the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.  And don’t forget to explore the quaint towns on the Cape and munch on some lobster rolls & clam chowda’.

FALL

Fall is our favorite time to travel.  It’s still fairly warm, kids are back to school, rates are cheaper, & the leaves put on a colorful show.  So save your vacation days for real vacation time (brush your shoulders off, shoulder season).

1. U.S. NATIONAL PARKS ON
THE WEST COAST

National Parks are normally very crowded during the summer, but there’s less crowds and it’s still warm during the fall.  Since kids are back to school it’ll most likely just be you and a bunch of retirees.

  • YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

We're always so quick to get out of the country, but Yellowstone National Park slapped us in the face and reminded us of how beautiful America is.  It’s an American institution and a national wonder that will have anyone in awe whether you’re an outdoorsman, animal lover, or photographer.

Click here for more on my ‘2 Days in Yellowstone National Park’ blog!

  • GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK

Arizona’s consistent dry weather makes exploring a breeze.  Camp at the Grand Canyon’s South Rim campgrounds & gaze at the stars in the comfort of your tent.  Wake up bright and early for sunrise at Yaki point then head to Antelope Canyon & Horshoe Bend.  If you’re feeling adventurous, maybe even paddle board on Lake Powell or hike from the South Rim to the North Rim of the canyon.

  • ZION NATIONAL PARK

Utah is be-utah-ful. From its arid deserts, to sandstone terrains, and to expansive ranches - its natural diversity will convince you that you’re driving through another planet.  Zion National Park is what we imagine Mars to look like.  The red cliffs and emerald pools look extraterrestrial, & the Mormon-run ranches feel like another century.

2. FALL FOLIAGE

  • HUDSON VALLEY

‘Tis the season for pumpkin spiced lattes, scented candles, and fall foliage.  One of the most popular weekend/ fall activities from NYC is a trip to the Hudson Valley.  Spend the weekend eating apple cider donuts at local farms, taking photos of art sculptures and foliage at Storm King Art Center, and cafe/ shop/ bar hop in one of the many quaint towns in the area (our favorites are Beacon and Cold Spring).

  • MUNICH, GERMANY

“Prost”-ing on the top of our lungs while standing on benches with a stein in one hand and a brahtwurste in the other, bonding with international friends wearing dirndls or lederhosens, and to eventually stumbling out of the biergarten to ride on the nearest carnival ride...now that's a celebration!  No matter your age, you should experience Oktoberfest in Munich at least once in your life. If beer isn’t your thing, Germany’s beautiful countryside in Bavaria will have you fall-ing in love during autumn time.

3. DESERT AREAS

The desert’s dry weather is bearable when it’s not over 100 degrees.  Aside from the weather, prices are cheaper in Northern Africa & the Middle East since it’s slightly off season.

  • MOROCCO

Morocco’s diverse landscapes, multitude of languages, charming architecture, and colorful food will feed every type of traveler’s wanderlust.  From surfing on the coast, to wandering around city markets, and to camping overnight in the desert, Morocco is a nice way to hang on to summer before fall ends.

Click here for more on my ‘5 Days in Morocco’ blog!

  • EGYPT

Egypt’s ancient civilization is incomparable - it’s a history buff’s dream come true.  You’ll feel larger than life at the pyramids of Giza and the mummies at the Egyptian museum will take you back in time.  Browse through the array of trinkets at the the bustling Khan Al-Khalili market.  And take time to explore beyond Cairo - relax by the Red Sea, and visit the historical monuments of Mount Sinai & Aswan.

  • ISRAEL

Fall is considered “winter” in Israel yet its warm enough to sun bathe at the beach and float in the Dead Sea.  Start off in Tel Aviv by exploring the old city of Jaffa & the neighboring towns of Neve Tzedek, Florentin, & Rothschild Boulevard. Indulge yourself in vegetarian Israeli dishes and experience a traditional Shabbat dinner on Friday night.  Take a journey to the Holy Land where you’ll feel closer to God no matter what your spiritual beliefs are.

Israel is a close drive to Jordan so why not continue the tour of the Holy Land and visit the ancient city of Petra, one of the 7 Wonders of World.  Take time to Indiana Jones your way to Wadi Rum for a desert safari or relax by the Jordan side of the Dead Sea.
