Welcome Mezcal Cocktails

After a year of pandemic blues, it was time to treat myself to a much needed vacation. So what’s more healing for the soul than a beach getaway to Mexico with my best friends.

From palapa to playa, Hotel Escondido is the beach vacation we’ve all been dreaming about this past year. With only 16 luxury, beachside bungalows on the property, each thatched-roof bungalow has a private plunge pool and patio just steps from the beach. It’s a beach dream come true.

Hotel Escondido’s
Peaceful Hideaway
in Mexico

Hotel Escondido is peacefully located away from the hustle and bustle of Puerto Escondido proper.  The resort is part of the Casa Wabi Foundation — a sustainable art and design community on a secluded stretch of beach on the Oaxacan Coast.

In addition to the serene landscape, Hotel Escondido is exclusively adults only (sorry kids), which adds more tranquility to the already, relaxing atmosphere.

Even though Hotel Escondido is far from the main parts of town like La Punta and Rinconada (about 30 minutes away), it’s easy to get around since taxis are readily available and affordable in Puerto Escondido. But it’s best to stay at Hotel Escondido either at the beginning or end of your trip in Puerto Escondido to fully appreciate the property.

How To Get To
Hotel Escondido

  • By Plane

Compared to commercialized beach towns, like Cancun or Cabo, Puerto Escondido is a bit harder to get to. There are no direct, international flights to Puerto Escondido, but it’s an easy connecting flight from Mexico City or Oaxaca City. Hotel Escondido is located 25 minutes away from Puerto Escondido Airport (PMX). The resort offers private airport pick up for about $30.

  • By Taxi

Arranging private taxis in Oaxaca is quite easy, but private taxis cost triple the price of a collectivo (shared taxi) or bus.  So if you’re planning to travel around Oaxaca via private taxi before or after your stay at Hotel Escondido, it’s 100% possible. We were traveling from Mazunte (a smaller beach town on the Oaxacan coast) and our 1.5 hour private taxi to Hotel Escondido cost about $60. Unfortunately, Uber is not available on the Oaxacan coast.

Bienvenidos a
Hotel Escondido

I wanted to cry the moment we arrived at Hotel Escondido. A tropical, beach getaway felt impossible this past year, and now that it was finally at our fingertips — I never felt more elated.

We arrived a few hours before check in, but we waited patiently at the open air lobby and beachside pool lounge.  Sipping iced coffees and mezcal negronis by the ocean already felt like paradise.

“Miss Dela Pena, your room is ready”. Once we jumped up in excitement and gathered our things, we were escorted to bungalow #16, one of the most private rooms in the entire resort.  As mentioned before, there are only 16 luxury, thatched-roof bungalows on the property.  All bungalows are rustic-chic, yet authentic to classic, Mexican “palapa” design.

Once we opened our bungalow door, we entered beachfront bliss.  A charming Mexican palapa with luxury amenities and sweeping ocean views — I must be dreaming. As I walked through our spacious patio and private plunge pool surrounded by hammocks, lounge chairs, and bougainvilleas, all I could say to myself was “wow, this is the life”.

The room itself was stylish and comfortable with thoughtful  touches like beach bags, sun hats, and natural bug spray. We were traveling as a group of 3, and even with an additional bed, there was ample space.

The king size bed was so comfortable, and sleeping to the sounds of the waves was incredibly peaceful.   One of our favorite moments of our stay was rolling out of bed in our cute, jean robes to watch sunrise on the beach.

  • Lounge by the Infinity Pool

Our bungalow was so relaxing, there was no reason to leave.  But if you want to shake things up, continue relaxing by the beachside infinity pool.  The pool lounge has comfy couches and hammocks, as well as a bar.  Wifi was strong by the infinity pool, so we worked on our laptops for a few hours while ordering food and drinks.  The pool lounge was definitely our favorite “office view” the entire trip.

  • Relax at the Beach

There are hammocks and lounge chairs scattered throughout the beach, with more than enough space to social distance from other guests.  The waves were a bit rough during our stay, but we were happy to simply read our books on the hammocks and feel the ocean breeze.  Be sure to catch both sunrise and sunset at the beach.

  • Treat Yourself to a Spa Treatment

Hotel Escondido’s Spa has numerous massage and facial treatments to choose from.  I booked the ‘1 Hour Relaxation and Energy Massage’ with Sara and it was incredible. The massage was just what I needed after so many long flights and taxi rides.

  • Book a Private Tour

If you’re interested in day tours outside of the resort, the concierge can arrange them for you. You can book private tours to the Casa Wabi Museum, Bioluminescence Lagoon, Hot Springs, and Turtle Release at Playa Bacocho. If you’re interested in activities like surfing, snorkeling, or kayaking, the concierge can arrange those as well.

Food at Hotel Escondido

Hotel Escondido's all inclusive rate comes with breakfast and a 3 course dinner.  I’m normally skeptical about food at resorts, but the food at Hotel Escondido was delicious — serving both authentic Mexican and international plates.

Lunch isn’t included in the rate, but the food and drink prices were affordable (in US standards).  We loved everything we ordered, especially the tllayudas and shrimp tostadas.

Omakase at Kakurega

For a one of a kind omakase experience in Mexico, be sure to make reservations for lunch or dinner at Hotel Escondido’s newest restaurant, Kakurega. Since I’m vegetarian I opted out, but the girls went for dinner and couldn’t stop raving about their experience.

If you’re looking for the most unique, beach-luxe stay in Puerto Escondido, look no further.  You won’t find luxury palapas like these anywhere else on the Oaxacan coast.  The all inclusive rate is a bit pricey, but it’s worth the splurge, especially after a year of pandemic blues.

ALL INCLUSIVE RATE:

+ Breakfast & 3 Course Dinner
